HARROW CARER WITH PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA IMPRISONED FOR KILLING FATHER
A caregiver suffering from mental health issues has been detained indefinitely after killing his 81-year-old father, whom he beat to death amidst the immense stress of caring for both his disabled parents.Mohsin Manji, aged 45, had been living with paranoid schizophrenia for around 25 years and was solely responsible for his immobile and dementia-affected father and mother.
According to court proceedings, during the assault at their residence in November 2015, Manji reported hearing voices of 'evil spirits' and believed his father, Amirali Manji, was a kind of 'zombie.' Although he denied committing murder, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
Prosecutor Mukul Chawla QC stated that this plea was accepted by the court, and Manji was made subject to a hospital detention order with restrictions imposed 'for public protection' without any specified timeframe.
Judge Michael Topolski QC expressed his profound sympathy and described the case as 'tragic,' noting that the elderly victim was attacked in his own home and was found unconscious afterward, with bruises and injuries from repeated blows.
He succumbed to his injuries and died on December 3, 2015.
Manji later told authorities, 'He called my mother a bastard so I hit my father many times,' adding that he believed 'evil spirits' were controlling him.
It was revealed that Manji had been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia since his late teens or early twenties, raising concerns about his care that had not been fully addressed.
While the court acknowledged these concerns about the level of support available, it had no jurisdiction over the care arrangements themselves.
The defense presented mitigation, emphasizing that the voices in Manji's head caused him to think his father was a zombie.
In light of the circumstances, the judge issued a hospital order and a restriction order, highlighting the tragic and complicated nature of the case.
