In September 2017, a serious incident occurred in the town of Galashiels involving a young man named Mohammed Pervez, who found himself in legal trouble after making inappropriate and sexual comments to a 15-year-old girl inside a local supermarket.

Pervez, aged 24 and currently pursuing a textiles doctorate at Heriot Watt University in Galashiels, was convicted following a trial held at Selkirk Sheriff Court. The incident took place on December 16 in the Asda store located on Currie Road, a well-known shopping destination in the town.

According to the court proceedings, the teenage girl recounted how Pervez initiated a conversation with her while she was shopping. During their interaction, he asked her personal questions, including whether she had a boyfriend, if she would go back to his flat with him, and whether she would like to have sex with him. He also inquired if she wanted to use a condom, which caused her significant distress.

Disturbed by his comments, the girl quickly ran away from the situation and confided in her mother about what had transpired. The incident raised serious concerns about inappropriate behavior and the safety of minors in public spaces.

During the trial, Pervez claimed he believed the girl was 18 years old, which he thought justified his approach. However, the court found that his actions were unacceptable regardless of his assumptions. His defense lawyer, Ross Dow, described the circumstances as bizarre, but acknowledged that his client understood he should not have approached anyone in such a manner, especially someone of the girl’s age.

Ultimately, Sheriff Derrick McIntyre imposed a fine of £750 on Pervez and ordered him to pay an additional £250 in compensation to the young girl. The case highlights the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries and respecting the safety of minors in public environments, and serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of inappropriate conduct in community spaces.
