MOHAMMED KHAN FROM SMETHWICK SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR ABUSE AND RAPE IN BLACK COUNTRY

Mohammed Khan, a man known to reside in Smethwick, has been convicted of a series of severe and disturbing crimes against his former partner, which spanned over a year and a half. The victim endured relentless physical violence, sexual assault, and coercive control at the hands of Khan, whose actions have left a lasting impact on her life.

Details of the case reveal that Khan subjected his partner to a brutal campaign of abuse, which included both physical and psychological torment. He would force her to watch Islamic faith videos in an apparent attempt to manipulate her into becoming a 'better girlfriend,' a tactic that was part of his broader pattern of coercive control. The physical assaults were particularly violent; on one occasion, he pinned her against a wardrobe by her throat, and on another, he punched her so forcefully that she chipped several teeth while they were in his car. These incidents highlight the severity of his violence and the danger she faced during their relationship.

The situation escalated in April of the previous year when Khan committed oral rape following a heated argument. This act of sexual violence was part of a series of threats and intimidation tactics he used to maintain dominance. He also threatened her with violence against herself and her family if she rejected his advances, warning her of the potential consequences should she refuse him. Such threats added a layer of fear and control that deeply affected her mental health and daily life.

The victim’s behavior changed dramatically as a result of the abuse. She began missing exams, lied about injuries she sustained, and stopped wearing makeup—all signs of the profound influence Khan had over her. Her family became increasingly concerned about her well-being as her demeanor and habits changed noticeably. It was only after her family raised concerns that the abuse was uncovered and brought to the attention of authorities.

Specialist police officers from the Public Protection Unit collaborated with Black Country Women’s Aid to provide the necessary support and protection for the victim. Her courage in coming forward and making a formal complaint was a pivotal step in bringing her abuser to justice. Following a thorough investigation, Khan was charged with four counts of rape and two counts of coercive control. The case was brought before Wolverhampton Crown Court, where he faced trial.

During the trial, Khan was convicted of one count of rape and the coercive control offences. He was acquitted of the other rape charges, but the convictions he did receive resulted in a significant sentence. On Thursday, May 2, Khan was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of his crimes and the impact of his actions on his victim.

Detective Inspector Cate Webb-Jones commented on the case, describing it as one of the worst examples of coercive control she had encountered. She praised the bravery of the victim for coming forward and emphasized the importance of reporting such behavior. Inspector Webb-Jones urged others who may be suffering in similar situations to seek help and not remain silent, highlighting the importance of community and law enforcement support in tackling domestic abuse and sexual violence.
