RAPIST MARK JARVIS'S CASE REFERRED TO COURT OF APPEAL
A convicted rapist from Smethwick, who was given a life sentence, has had his legal case referred back to the Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.Mark Jarvis, aged 39 and living on Windmill Lane, was convicted at Wolverhampton Crown Court in 1998 on charges including rape, kidnapping, and robbery, with a judge ruling he serve a minimum term of seven and a half years.
The prosecution outlined that Jarvis had abducted a woman, robbed her, and coerced her into withdrawing funds from ATMs before sexually assaulting her.
Additionally, he took her rings and necklace and demanded her money, using her bank cards to make her withdraw approximately £1,000 from multiple banks.
The attack occurred when the woman was alone at a bus stop on Bearwood Road in Smethwick early in January 1998, when Jarvis grabbed her by her coat, threatened to cut her throat unless she obeyed, and forced her into his van.
Jarvis later applied for further reviews of his case on several occasions but initially did not raise any new grounds for appeal.
Despite these earlier rejections, the Criminal Cases Review Commission has now deemed his case suitable for further legal consideration.
Jarvis has spent the majority of his life incarcerated, including a prior imprisonment starting in 1986 for rape.
His appeal against his sentence was turned down in March 1999, and a subsequent appeal in July 1999 was also dismissed by the courts.
