WALTHAM FOREST MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER OF MOTHER
Mitchell Denahy, age 27 and residing on Waverley Avenue in Waltham Forest, was found guilty on March 3 at Snaresbrook Crown Court of manslaughter in a case described as 'tragic and distressing' involving his mother. The victim, 61-year-old Beverly Denahy, was discovered by police at their residence with severe head and facial injuries on January 22, 2020.
Authorities responded to a disturbance call at approximately 11:33 pm and found Ms.
Denahy lying in the hallway, her face and body mostly hidden beneath clothing and household items, with blood splatters visible on the walls.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, with a post-mortem revealing her death resulted from blunt force trauma to the head.
Evidence collected at the scene included trainers, jogging bottoms, and a blood-stained shirt belonging to Denahy, along with a heavily bloodstained metal stopcock key used to control water flow.
Denahy was detained on suspicion of murder and remained silent during police questioning.
He was formally charged with murder two days later, on January 24, 2020.
An initial trial ended with a majority verdict of not guilty, prompting a retrial, during which the defense argued diminished responsibility due to mental health issues.
Ultimately, Denahy was convicted of manslaughter and is now in custody pending sentencing, scheduled for July 28 at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
