BLACKPOOL MAN MICHAEL NELSON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LAYTON PUBLIC TOILET
In a disturbing incident that took place in the seaside town of Blackpool, a three-year-old boy was subjected to a serious sexual assault in a public setting, prompting swift action from vigilant cleaners who played a crucial role in preventing further harm.On July 23 of the previous year, Michael Nelson, a 20-year-old resident of Church Street, Blackpool, lured the young boy into a disabled toilet located in Layton Square. The assault was carried out within the confined space of the restroom, a location that heightened the severity of the crime. Fortunately, the attack was interrupted before it could escalate further, thanks to the quick-thinking and courageous intervention of two cleaners working nearby.
These cleaners, upon hearing the distressed cries of the child, immediately responded and entered the scene. Their actions not only halted the assault but also effectively barricaded Nelson inside the toilet until law enforcement authorities arrived to take control of the situation. Their bravery and prompt response were widely praised by officials and community members alike, with Detective Inspector Tony Baxter from the resort’s public protection unit emphasizing the importance of their role.
Det Insp Baxter stated, “It was an absolutely horrific attack. It is without doubt the cleaners have saved this lad from a more serious attack. They have saved him from potentially even more torture and they are to be commended for their actions and their quick-thinking in protecting the young lad.”
Following his arrest, Nelson was charged and subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge of rape. The court proceedings revealed that, despite having previous convictions, Nelson’s record contained no similar offenses, and his defense lawyer, Chris Hudson, described his actions as “foolish” rather than “evil.”
Mr. Hudson further explained, “There is no suggestion he would do it again. He has had a very significant and painful lesson. He needs help and he is prepared to receive it. He has never previously received any form of custodial sentence. He was bored at the time and had taken cannabis, that is no excuse. What happened was crass stupidity and experimentation. It was a one-off.”
Judge Andrew Woolman, presiding over the case at Preston Crown Court, acknowledged the remorse shown by Nelson and his apparent determination to avoid reoffending. However, the judge also noted that both the probation service and a psychiatrist had assessed Nelson as a potential danger to the public. As a result, Nelson was sentenced to nine years in prison, followed by an additional three years on extended licence. Furthermore, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and prohibited from working with children in the future.
Detective Inspector Baxter highlighted the critical role played by the cleaners, stating, “The lad himself was very brave and hopefully he is too young for it to have any lasting effect on him. It was a harrowing experience and without these two people we would absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, not have known about it. The reality is who knows how long this sort of thing could have gone on for.”
Community leaders and law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance and quick action in safeguarding vulnerable individuals, especially in public spaces like those in Blackpool’s Layton area, where this disturbing incident unfolded.
