CHESTER PENSIONER MICHAEL MURRAY ARRESTED IN HEATHROW AFTER 13-YEAR COURT ABSENCE
In a remarkable case that spans over a decade, Michael Murray, a pensioner from Chester, finally appeared in court on Tuesday, March 13, after being absent for 13 years. His absence was due to his prolonged stay abroad, which included time spent in the Far East, and his failure to attend a scheduled court hearing in 2005.Originally, Murray was due to be sentenced in 2005 at Dolgellau Magistrates' Court for seven separate offences related to the possession and downloading of indecent images. However, just two days before his scheduled appearance, Murray informed his legal representatives that he was in China, claiming to be working there. Despite this, he did not return to face the charges, and his case was subsequently adjourned.
Fast forward to recent days, Murray, now 76 and formerly residing on Lache Lane in Chester, was arrested at Heathrow Airport after arriving from Australia via Beijing. His arrest took place on Saturday, and it was revealed that he had been traveling internationally, which included a stop in China. The authorities confirmed that Murray had been in poor health, and he did not anticipate leaving the UK again.
During the hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court, Judge David Hale was informed of Murray’s arrest and his long absence from the legal process. The court was also told that Murray had been in Australia before his recent flight, and that he had previously claimed to be working in China, possibly as a teacher. His failure to appear in court in 2005 was characterized by the judge as a deliberate attempt to evade justice.
In addition to his absence, Murray admitted to breaching his bail conditions. As a result, he was sentenced to six months in prison. The court also noted that Murray would face further sentencing next month for the offences related to child images, once a probation report has been received and considered.
Judge Hale addressed Murray directly, stating, “This was a deliberate decision by you to avoid dealing with the matter back in 2005,” emphasizing the gravity of his evasion and the importance of accountability in such cases.
