MICHAEL MCMILLAN FROM CROSBY SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS FOR POLICE MISCONDUCT IN MERSEYSIDE

Michael McMillan, a former detective who once served in the Family Crime Investigation Unit of Merseyside Police, has been sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to serious misconduct involving seven victims. The 32-year-old, who is married and a father of two, exploited his position of authority to prey on vulnerable women, engaging in a pattern of disturbing and predatory behavior that shocked the local community in Crosby and beyond.

McMillan’s misconduct was characterized by a series of manipulative and sexually inappropriate actions. He was found to have sent hundreds of explicit messages daily, including sexts, lewd images, and videos, to women he targeted. He also requested nude photographs from victims and persuaded some to withdraw complaints or engage in sexual acts. His abuse of trust was carried out under the guise of his professional role, which he used to exploit women during their most vulnerable moments.

The investigation into McMillan’s conduct was triggered when a 17-year-old contact raised concerns, prompting police to scrutinize his communications. This led to the discovery of an extensive pattern of inappropriate and sexual texts, revealing the extent of his misconduct. Liverpool Crown Court heard how McMillan manipulated victims, often pressuring them into sexual acts, and even attempted to influence police actions against their wishes, further demonstrating his abuse of authority.

During the court proceedings, McMillan’s legal representatives highlighted that he suffers from bipolar disorder and was under psychiatric care at the time of his misconduct. They expressed remorse on his behalf, but the judge, Clement Goldstone QC, was unequivocal in condemning his actions. The judge stated, “You used your position as a detective constable to satisfy your apparent insatiable sexual appetite in the worst way imaginable,” emphasizing the gravity of his abuse of power.

The investigation was carried out by the police Anti-Corruption Unit in conjunction with the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Authorities underscored that misconduct in public office is a serious offence that erodes public trust in law enforcement institutions. Following the findings, Merseyside Police dismissed McMillan after a misconduct hearing, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity among officers. The sentencing reflects the serious consequences of abusing a position of authority and highlights ongoing efforts to root out corruption and misconduct within the police force in Merseyside and Crosby.
