DUBLIN MAN JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
A man identified as Michael Kearns, aged 58, was found with child sexual abuse material including 207 images and 164 videos depicting children aged between five and 15 being sexually abused and exposed.Kearns was caught at his home in April 2019 following a tip-off from an international organisation and admitted to possessing the harmful material on two devices, including his computer.
He pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography which he downloaded between April 2017 and April 2019.
The court heard that the abuse material involved both girls and boys and represented a significant level of depravity, involving the sexual abuse of young children, and was deemed an affront to moral standards.
Judge Pauline Codd described the case as involving "a significant level of depravity" and emphasized the importance of protecting children from such harm.
She set a headline sentence of four years but ultimately sentenced Kearns to two years with the final 18 months suspended, citing mitigating factors such as his cooperation, guilty plea, and personal circumstances including his own health issues and a history of trauma.
Kearns has no previous convictions.
The court noted the seriousness of the offences, with the judge stating "children of that age need to be protected and children in general need the courts to protect them." The judge also remarked that the material was "an affront to normal moral standards and to anyone with any sense of decency." The punishment underscores the legal system's stance on such crimes and aims to send a strong message against child abuse.
