MICHAEL JOHNSON AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMES IN YORKSHIRE

A man described as a 'cruel and cowardly' criminal has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for a disturbing series of sexual offenses committed against two victims in Yorkshire. Michael Johnson, aged 64, was found guilty of a range of serious crimes, including the use of a child for sexual purposes and multiple acts of rape.

According to court proceedings at York Crown Court, Johnson's heinous actions included attempting to forcibly rape a young girl. His conduct towards her was characterized as predatory and deeply disturbing, highlighting a pattern of abuse that inflicted significant trauma. The court heard harrowing evidence detailing the extent of his misconduct.

In a separate case, Johnson subjected a woman to a horrific ordeal by raping her twice. The judge, Simon Hickey, described his treatment of her as barbaric, likening it to medieval cruelty and treating her as an object rather than a human being. These offenses took place many years ago but have left lasting scars on the victims.

Johnson, who resides on Hill Top in Barlby, admitted to seven charges against him. However, he refused to accept responsibility for an additional 14 charges, insisting on denying those allegations. Despite his denial, both victims bravely provided detailed accounts of the abuse they endured, including specifics of what Johnson had done to them, forcing them to relive their trauma.

For years, both women struggled with the burden of silence, feeling unable or afraid to report Johnson's crimes. It was only after a lengthy investigation and overcoming their fears that they came forward, which ultimately led to Johnson's conviction earlier this spring. The jury in York found him guilty on all 14 charges presented, which included two counts of rape, two attempted rapes, 16 charges of indecent assault, and one charge of indecency with a child.

As part of his sentence, Johnson will be forever included on the sex offenders’ register, marking the lifelong impact of his crimes. His legal team, led by defense barrister Andrew Petterson, acknowledged that there was little to mitigate the severity of the offenses.

This was not Johnson’s first encounter with the criminal justice system related to sexual offenses. Records reveal a prior conviction for indecent assault against a girl under 14 years old, which was committed when Johnson himself was under 18.

Outside the courtroom, Detective Constable Jenna Hallewell from North Yorkshire Police highlighted the bravery of the victims and condemned Johnson’s callousness. She remarked, “Johnson’s cruelty, violence, and dishonesty contrast so strongly with the courage of the victims in coming forward to the police, and ensuring justice could be done.”

She emphasized the courage it takes for victims to speak out, particularly when perpetrators like Johnson choose to force them to endure public trials and relive their suffering. DC Hallewell expressed hope that the victims could now begin to move forward, relieved that Johnson would no longer be a threat to them or others.

The officer also urged anyone who has experienced sexual offenses at any time to come forward and report these crimes. “If you have been the victim of sexual offences, no matter when they happened, please report it to the police. As this case shows, we will investigate these heinous crimes and bring offenders to justice. Your courage can help prevent others from suffering the same fate,” she concluded.
