A WOMAN SUFFERING FROM DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND PSYCHIATRIC ISSUES FINED FOR SHOP THEFT IN SELBY
A woman who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder after she was partially blinded in vicious domestic violence has been fined £40 for stealing meat from a shop.Michelle Mohammed, 61, who appeared in custody after she failed to attend court and was arrested on a warrant, couldn't remember anything about the shop theft, the court heard.
Her solicitor Graham Parkin said she has post traumatic stress disorder and is terrified to leave her home as a result of the “very vicious” domestic violence that left her with three fractures to her cheekbone, blind in one eye, a damaged retina in the other and other injuries.
She has no memory of going into Aldi and of taking things, but she accepts it was her,” he said.
Mohammed, of Selby, pleaded guilty to theft of meat worth nearly £80 from Aldi supermarket in Selby on October 15.
She was on a community order at the time that remains in force.
York magistrates told her: “We have heard the tragic circumstances of the assault where you lost the sight of one eye and that you are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
However, looking at your record for theft which starts in 1980, this isn’t a one-off.
This is something you have become accustomed to.
Unfortunately that needs to stop.
We want you to get the help you need.
You must attend all your appointments, and particularly work with the mental health team, that is probably the most beneficial.” They fined her £40 and ordered her to pay £77.93 compensation to Aldi, £85 prosecution costs and a £16 statutory surcharge.
Christopher Edward Norton partially blinded the woman (Image: North Yorkshire Police) Norton, now 44, of D’Arcy Road, Selby, was jailed for five years and two weeks at York Crown Court in March 2024 for causing Mohammed grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm and made subject to a 15-year restraining order banning him from contacting Mohammed.
Mr.
Parkin said Norton had been released from prison in October.
That caused her considerable stress, accentuating her post traumatic stress disorder,” said Mr.
Parkin.
“She didn’t come to court because on her own she simply cannot get out of the house.
She has tried.”
