MICHAEL HOLMES FROM WEST CORNFORTH JAILED FOR BRUTAL RAPE AND VIOLENCE IN COUNTY DURHAM

Michael Holmes, a 42-year-old known for his aggressive and violent behavior, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following a series of heinous crimes committed in West Cornforth, County Durham.

Holmes, who has a background as a bare-knuckle fighter and is often referred to by the nickname 'Rocky,' was found guilty of multiple serious offenses, including two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, sexual assault, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The court heard that Holmes's violent tendencies extended beyond sexual assault.

During one particularly disturbing incident, he became enraged with his victim and attempted to threaten her with a crossbow.

According to the court, Holmes pulled the trigger, but the weapon malfunctioned, and the bolt failed to fire, narrowly missing its target.

This act of intimidation was part of a pattern of aggressive and controlling behavior that characterized his interactions with the woman.

Holmes's violent nature was further demonstrated when he physically assaulted the woman by punching her three times in the face, resulting in a broken nose that required surgical intervention.

The judge described Holmes as a dangerous individual, emphasizing his physical size and his career as a bare-knuckle fighter, which he used to dominate and intimidate his victim.

The court noted that Holmes showed a blatant disregard for her wishes and feelings, employing force and emotional manipulation to suppress her autonomy.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Jonathan Carroll condemned Holmes's actions, stating, "You used your size and dominating personality to act as you wished.

You showed a complete disregard for her wishes and feelings.

You are a sexual, physical, and emotional bully.

You used force and intimidation to suppress her wishes." The judge also highlighted the severity of the assault that caused the woman's broken nose, remarking on Holmes's physical stature and his chosen profession, which contrasted sharply with the vulnerability of his victim.

Holmes, who resides at Virginia Court in West Cornforth, was convicted after a trial that revealed the extent of his violence and abuse.

The prosecution, led by Michael Bunch, described how the attacks left the woman feeling isolated and terrified, with her suffering profound emotional and physical trauma.

In her victim impact statement, she expressed her devastation, saying, "He has caused me to lose everything from my life." Defense attorney Christopher Morrison argued that Holmes continues to deny the allegations but acknowledged that such cases are not uncommon in similar circumstances.

Despite this, the court imposed a substantial sentence of 16 years in prison, with an additional three years on extended license.

Holmes was also subjected to an indefinite restraining order and a lifelong sexual harm prevention order to protect future victims.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Rebecca Horner from the South Durham Safeguarding Team commented on the case, stating, "Holmes is a violent and controlling bully who is a danger to women, so I am pleased he is now off the streets and behind bars.

The woman in this case has shown immense bravery in coming forward to police and helping us to bring her abuser to justice."
