LEE ELDRRETT FROM WEST CORNFORTH SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR BRUTAL ATTACK AND THREATS IN DURHAM
In August 2023, a disturbing case of domestic violence and threats culminated in the imprisonment of Lee Eldrett, a man from West Cornforth. The incident involved a violent assault on a woman within her own home, where Eldrett's actions escalated to include physical violence and threatening behavior that left a lasting impact.According to reports, Eldrett, aged 35, subjected the woman to a savage attack, during which he struck her multiple times on her head, face, arms, and hands while she was lying on the floor. The assault was not only physical but also menacing, as Eldrett brandished a knife and issued threats to her life. His violent outburst continued as he punched her and attempted to strangle her, causing her to feel faint and experience blurred vision, indicating the severity of the assault.
The situation took a further sinister turn when Eldrett seized an air rifle, pointed it directly at the woman, and declared his intention to kill her. This act of intimidation prompted an immediate response from police officers, who arrived swiftly at the scene. Upon their arrival, Eldrett attempted to resist arrest but was quickly subdued and handcuffed. His resistance was unsuccessful, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
Following his arrest, Durham Constabulary launched a comprehensive investigation into the events. Eldrett was subsequently charged with multiple serious offenses, including intentional strangulation, assault causing actual bodily harm, making threats to kill, possession of an air weapon with the intent to cause fear of violence, and resisting a police officer. Additionally, he faced charges of perverting the course of justice after attempting to persuade the woman to alter her statement during a phone call while he was on remand in prison.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Eldrett maintained his innocence, denying all charges. However, after a trial, the court found him guilty of the offenses. On July 28, Durham Crown Court sentenced him to eight years in prison, marking a significant conviction for a case that highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and threats of lethal violence in the Durham area, specifically affecting the community in West Cornforth.
