MICHAEL BROUGHTON'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN LONGFORD: PAEDOPHILE LURED YOUNG GIRL WITH SWEETS AND PROMISED GIFTS

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Longford, Michael Broughton, a 68-year-old man residing on Mardale Avenue, was convicted of heinous crimes involving a young girl. The incident came to light after the victim, who was between the ages of seven and nine at the time, disclosed her distress following exposure to a television programme that made her realize the inappropriate nature of Broughton’s actions.

According to court proceedings, Broughton engaged in a series of manipulative and abusive behaviors aimed at the young girl. He used sweets, specifically Minstrels chocolates, as a means to lure her into his presence. The court heard that he would place these chocolates inside his underpants and then instruct the girl to retrieve them, a tactic that was part of his grooming process. Additionally, Broughton made promises of presents to the girl, attempting to manipulate her into engaging in sexual acts. One particularly disturbing detail was his request for her to perform a sex act on him, promising to buy her a cuddly toy as a reward. The toy was later purchased online, with Broughton claiming it was for her good school report, further illustrating his manipulative approach.

Legal proceedings revealed that Broughton’s misconduct extended over a lengthy period. Police investigations uncovered that he had been regularly texting the girl from January 2011 through March 2013, despite having no prior criminal record. The victim was reportedly under significant emotional distress, suffering from nightmares and fear, which persisted even after his arrest in August of the previous year.

During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Andrew Green, detailed the extent of Broughton’s abuse. The court was told that the victim was threatened with punishment if she disclosed the abuse, which added to her trauma. Broughton initially denied the charges, pleading not guilty to one count of rape and three counts of inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. However, on the day of the trial, he changed his plea to guilty.

Defense lawyer John Banasko argued that Broughton, who had no previous convictions, was an elderly man in poor health and would face difficulties in custody. Despite this, the court was not swayed from delivering a severe sentence. Judge Robert Warnock sentenced Broughton to a total of 11 years and eight months in prison.

Throughout the proceedings, Judge Warnock praised the bravery of the young girl for her courage in testifying. He emphasized the devastating impact of Broughton’s actions, stating that he had robbed a child of her innocence and caused her ongoing emotional suffering. The judge also criticized Broughton’s apparent lack of remorse, noting that he was in denial about the gravity of his crimes and only expressed concern for his own predicament.
