MELVIN BERRIDGE FROM NORMANTON JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN LEICESTERSHIRE
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Normanton, Derbyshire, Melvin Berridge has been sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to indecently assaulting two young boys during the early 1980s.The crimes, which took place in Leicestershire, only came to light last year when both victims, who were just seven and nine years old at the time, courageously reported the incidents to authorities.
Police investigations revealed that Berridge, now aged 60, had carried out these heinous acts over a period of approximately one year.
The victims' bravery in coming forward prompted a thorough investigation by Leicestershire Constabulary, culminating in Berridge's arrest in April of the previous year.
During a court hearing in August, Berridge admitted to the charges, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing at Leicester Crown Court.
In addition to his prison term, Berridge was issued a sexual offence prevention order.
This order explicitly prohibits him from visiting or residing with any child under the age of 16 without prior notification to the child's parents.
It also restricts him from working with children or in environments where children under 16 are present regularly.
These measures aim to prevent any further harm and protect potential future victims.
Detective Constable Andy Spence of Leicestershire Constabulary, who led the investigation, expressed admiration for the victims' resilience.
He emphasized the importance of reporting such crimes, regardless of how much time has passed, stating, "These two men have shown tremendous courage in coming forward to report these crimes and in helping to secure a conviction.
They will hopefully now have some closure from this result, and we’d like to help other people achieve this." Police have released a photograph of Berridge in hopes of encouraging other potential victims or witnesses to come forward.
