MATT SPURGEON FROM WINGATE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL GROOMING OF TEEN IN COUNTY DURHAM

In a case that has shocked the local community of Wingate, Matthew Spurgeon, a 32-year-old man from Dormand Court, was found guilty of grooming a teenage girl for sexual activity. The incident took place in April 2011 and involved a series of manipulative actions that ultimately led to a disturbing encounter.

According to court proceedings, Spurgeon, described as an 'intelligent' and 'articulate' individual, used his charm and persuasive skills to gain the trust of the young girl. During a walk in the countryside, he complimented her, telling her she was beautiful and that no one else compared to her. This was part of his grooming process, which aimed to lower her defenses and make her feel special.

The court heard that Spurgeon attempted to have sex with the girl on two separate occasions during this walk, but both attempts were unsuccessful. When she told him to stop, he complied, casually remarking, 'It’s time to get the dog back anyway,' indicating a dismissive attitude towards her boundaries. Prosecutor Aisha Wadoodi explained that prior to this incident, the two had exchanged text messages, in which Spurgeon expressed his feelings by saying, 'I really like you.' He also kissed her, further complicating the situation and demonstrating his manipulative behavior.

The girl confided in her mother about what had happened five months later, revealing that Spurgeon had made her feel special, which she later recognized as part of his grooming tactics. Her delayed disclosure highlights the often subtle and insidious nature of such abuse, which can go unnoticed for months.

Spurgeon admitted to the charge of sexual assault, and during the hearing, his defense lawyer, Jane Waugh, acknowledged that he had experienced a difficult childhood. She also mentioned that he had undergone a period of reflection following the recent death of his step-son earlier this year, expressing hope that he would not have to appear in court again.

Judge Christopher Prince delivered the sentence, emphasizing that Spurgeon’s intelligence and charm had been weaponized to manipulate his victim. The judge noted that the girl was left deeply disturbed by the incident, which had a lasting impact on her well-being. As a result, Spurgeon was sentenced to 37 months in prison and will be registered as a sex offender for life, underscoring the severity of his actions and the court’s stance on protecting victims from such predatory behavior.
