ANDREW BELL FROM DARLINGTON, WHEATLEY HILL, AND WINGATE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST YOUNG GIRLS
In a case that has sent shockwaves through County Durham, Andrew Bell, a 43-year-old man with ties to Darlington, Wheatley Hill, and Wingate, has been sentenced to an indefinite term in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses involving two young girls.The incidents took place between June and November of the previous year, during which Bell targeted two girls aged 13 and 14.
These assaults occurred while Bell was residing in Wheatley Hill and Wingate, raising concerns about the safety of children in these communities.
During the trial at Durham Crown Court, the court heard that Bell denied all allegations, forcing the victims to give their testimonies in front of a jury.
Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including attempted rape of the 14-year-old girl, sexual assault, and causing a child to engage in sexual activity without her consent.
Bell's refusal to accept responsibility for his actions did not prevent the court from delivering justice.
Judge Richard Lowden, who presided over the case, sentenced Bell to an indefinite imprisonment, emphasizing the need to protect the public from further harm.
In his remarks, the judge stated, "It is clear from the risk assessment that you do present a high risk of sexual harm to female children.
I am satisfied you do pose a significant danger to the community through the potential for further offenses.
You are, therefore, classified as a dangerous offender." Judge Lowden also clarified that Bell would not be eligible for parole until he has served at least three and a half years of his sentence.
However, he made it clear that this does not imply Bell will be released at that time, stating, "That is not for one moment to suggest you will, or should be, released at that stage in your sentence." As part of his sentence, Bell, who resides at Tom Raine Court in Darlington, will be subject to lifelong supervision and must register as a sex offender indefinitely.
Additionally, he is permanently barred from working with children.
The parole board will later determine if and when Bell might be considered safe for release back into society, but for now, he remains a significant threat to the community.
