BILLERICAY SPORTS COACH MATTHEW LEONARD SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BASILDON

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Billericay and the surrounding areas, Matthew Leonard, a 21-year-old sports coach from Upland Close in Billericay, has been sentenced to a substantial prison term of seven years for a series of heinous online child sex offences.

The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior carried out over an extended period, involving numerous young victims across the United Kingdom.

Leonard pleaded guilty to 15 separate charges, which included inciting children to perform sexual acts via the internet and possessing indecent images of minors.

Following his arrest by police authorities in April, Leonard admitted to an additional ten offences, but investigators believe that the true number of his victims could be as high as 80.

The court was informed that Leonard exploited the social networking platform 'Habbo Hotel,' a site primarily aimed at children aged between 8 and 12, to establish contact with vulnerable youngsters.

Using a false identity and age, Leonard offered virtual furniture, known as 'furni,' to young girls, often as a lure to engage them further.

The court heard that he then transitioned conversations to the instant messaging service MSN, where he would incite the girls to perform sexual acts on webcam.

These acts were recorded by Leonard on his computer, and he would threaten to distribute the images on Facebook or share them with friends if the victims refused to comply with his demands for further sexual acts.

The criminal activities spanned from July 2010 until Leonard's arrest in April of the following year.

Police executed a warrant at his residence, uncovering a disturbing collection of digital material, including 260 indecent images of children and 16 indecent videos.

Prosecutor Carolyn Gardiner described Leonard's chilling attitude during arrest, quoting him as saying, “It’s just pictures and videos, I work with kids, it’s not like that.” Throughout the court proceedings, Leonard sat with his head bowed, visibly distressed as the charges and evidence were presented.

During police interviews, he claimed not to view his victims as 'real kids,' asserting, “you think it’s just an image, just a video,” which further highlighted his disturbing detachment from the gravity of his crimes.

The impact of Leonard’s actions extended beyond his own life, severely affecting his family.

His mother, a child minder, was compelled to cease her work, and his father was reported to have attempted suicide following Leonard’s arrest.

Additionally, the court was informed that Leonard’s brother was known to police for viewing child exploitation images online, adding a further layer of concern to the case.

Defense lawyer Mark Savage acknowledged Leonard’s remorse, stating that his client had become a person he despises after mixing with paedophiles during custody.

Savage urged the court to consider Leonard’s young age when determining the sentence, emphasizing that the punishment he faced would likely extend far beyond the prison term through ongoing supervision and societal consequences.

After a thorough hour-long deliberation, Judge Jonathan Black sentenced Leonard to seven years in prison.

The judge also imposed an additional three years of supervised release, emphasizing that Leonard had “ruined his own life” and posed a “serious risk to young girls.” Judge Black expressed his belief that the offences would have persisted much longer had law enforcement not intervened.

Furthermore, Leonard was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, placed under a lifetime Sexual Offence Prevention Order, and permanently barred from working with children in any capacity in the future.
