HEAD TEACHER WHO RAPED CHILD JAILED FOR 16 YEARS
A former head teacher who sexually abused and raped a child has been sentenced to 16 years in prison. The allegations against Lee Brumby took place while he was working at Mayflower High School in Billericay, Essex, in 2022, though the victim was not a student at the school, either current or former.
The court heard that he made his victim "pretend to be a waitress, asking him what he wanted, pretending to serve him".
Judge Richard Conley described Brumby as a "deeply selfish man" who left behind a "trail of devastation".
He was found guilty of two counts of rape, two of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and one of indecency with a child, with charges relating to offences spanning from 2001 to 2014.
Brumby was also suspended from Mayflower High School following the allegations.
The court heard a statement from the victim, who said she would often wake in the night "shaking, panicking and unable to go back to sleep" and feared Brumby would retaliate against her.
The judge emphasized her life had been "blighted by crimes of sexualised violence".
Brumby had also worked at other institutions, including Southend High School for Girls and in Newcastle, and even briefly served as a police officer.
Judge Conley remarked that pupils and parents would be "left aghast" when they learn of Brumby’s actions, which were hidden "in plain sight".
Brumby was to serve an additional year on license after his prison term, with a lifelong restraining order preventing contact with his victim and registration on the sex offenders register.
The sentence was handed down at Basildon Crown Court, where Brumby was described as having posed as "the epitome of respectability" and an "accomplished professional".
His ex-wife was acquitted of all charges he faced.
