JAIL FOR RAPIST CAUGHT BY ACCIDENTAL 999 CALL
From 2013.A young man convicted of raping a teenager at Chertsey Meads has received a six-year prison sentence.
Matthew Duggan, aged 20 and a resident of Scotts Avenue, Sunbury, was found guilty at Guildford Crown Court in January this year of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape.
The incident occurred on July 25 last year after Duggan and his friends had been drinking in Sunbury and Chertsey.
He subsequently met the 19-year-old victim.
Following their visit to Chertsey Meads, the assault took place.
During sentencing, prosecutor Ruby Selva highlighted a distressing 999 emergency call, which was connected to the victim’s mobile during the attack.
The court heard that Duggan could be heard on the recording urging: "Open your legs.
You're getting raped." Ms Selva also revealed that when Duggan was detained and taken to the police station, he made arrogant comments about his incarceration, claiming he deserved a 'more luxurious cell' because he considered himself superior.
He reportedly stated that his family would support him upon release, acknowledged the need for a positive attitude, and expressed remorse for his actions.
Judge Jeremy Carter-Manning sentenced Duggan to six years in a young offenders' institution for each of the two counts, with the sentences to be served concurrently.
The judge emphasised the lasting impact on the victim and described Duggan’s conduct as 'absolutely appalling and very, very serious.' Duggan will serve half of his sentence behind bars and has been placed on the sex offenders' register for an indefinite period.
The court underscored the profound effect this incident will have on the victim's mental well-being for years to come.
