COLCHESTER PAEDOPHILE MATTHEW CALLEJA ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SHARING CHILD RAPE VIDEOS

In July 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving a man from Colchester who engaged in the distribution of child abuse material online, yet narrowly avoided immediate imprisonment.

Matthew Calleja, a 37-year-old painter and decorator, was found to have attempted to conceal evidence of his illegal activities during his arrest, which took place on November 12 of the previous year.

When police officers arrived to apprehend Calleja, he made an effort to hide his involvement by discarding his mobile phone, throwing it onto a rooftop in an apparent attempt to prevent its seizure.

Despite this, officers managed to recover the device, which was later subjected to detailed forensic analysis.

The investigation revealed that Calleja had been using the online pseudonym 'Tony Hart' on Kik Messenger, a popular messaging platform.

Under this alias, he maintained an active account for approximately five months, during which he shared highly illegal content.

Specifically, on November 11, the day before his arrest, Calleja distributed three Category A indecent movies, which are classified as the most severe type of child abuse material, to three different users.

On the same day, he also shared two Category B movies with six other users.

Further examination of his phone uncovered additional disturbing content, including two more Category A images, six Category A movies, 16 Category B images, nine Category B movies, 27 Category C images, and five videos depicting extreme pornography.

The most heinous of these videos depicted the rape of children as young as two years old.

Prosecutor Charles Falk detailed the extent of Calleja’s involvement, stating that the evidence pointed to active participation in a network that facilitated the sharing of such illegal content.

During police interviews, Calleja claimed he was attempting to 'catch paedophiles,' a defense that was dismissed by the authorities.

Instead, the evidence demonstrated that he was an active participant in the distribution of these vile materials.

At Ipswich Crown Court, Recorder Richard Atchley addressed Calleja directly, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.

He remarked, “The matters for which you fall to be sentenced are serious and highly unpleasant.

They impact on children everywhere who are subjected to the abuse you viewed and distributed.” The judge acknowledged that while a custodial sentence might serve as a short-term deterrent, it would not address the underlying issues that led Calleja to commit these offenses.

Consequently, Calleja was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years.

Additionally, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and participate in 40 days of rehabilitation activities.

As part of his sentence, Calleja will also be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and potential risk to the community.
