MAIDSTONE CHILD ABUSER MARTYN WALLER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN PRISON
In August 2017, a disturbing case involving the sexual abuse of three young girls in Maidstone culminated in the sentencing of Martyn Waller, a 52-year-old man from Shepway, Maidstone. The court heard how Waller’s actions had caused irreversible damage to the victims’ lives, prompting a stern judgment from the presiding judge.
Martyn Waller was convicted of multiple serious charges, including five counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of indecency with a child, two counts of indecent assault, and one count of attempted sexual activity with a child.
The offences spanned over a period of 12 years, during which Waller exploited his victims in various ways within the Maidstone area.
The court was told that Waller’s behaviour was characterized by a pattern of manipulation and abuse, with one victim recounting her fear of him due to his violent tendencies.
Prosecutor Richard Cherrill emphasized that Waller had exerted a dominating influence over the girls, taking advantage of their vulnerability at different stages of their childhood.
Judge Philip Statman delivered a powerful and somber verdict, condemning Waller for the profound psychological harm he had inflicted.
The judge described the case as highly complex and sensitive, highlighting the long-lasting impact on the victims.
Waller, who had been living rough in a tent at the time of sentencing, had engaged in sexual acts with one of the girls.
Although he pleaded not guilty to rape, the prosecution accepted his plea, and he was convicted on the other charges.
Addressing the court, Judge Statman stated, “The impact of your offending has been profound.
You destroyed her formative adolescent years.
Part of her knew what you were doing was wrong, but she as a child had no one to turn to.
She was young and vulnerable.
You controlled her.
She made suicidal attempts and self-harmed.
She has reported that which you did to her in a most grave and complete way.” The judge also noted the severe effects on another victim, with whom Waller had also engaged in sexual intercourse.
This victim felt worthless and was too frightened to report her abuse at the time.
Waller’s attempt to have sex with a third girl was interrupted, but the damage he caused was already done.
Judge Statman condemned him for having “utterly destroyed the lives of three young women.” Waller, in a moment of reflection, admitted feeling like “some sort of monster” and expressed that he was prepared to serve whatever length of sentence was deemed appropriate.
Despite this, the judge expressed concern that Waller still did not accept that he had sexual interests in children, which influenced the decision not to impose extended dangerous offender provisions.
Waller’s name will be permanently listed on the sex offenders’ register, ensuring lifelong monitoring and restrictions.
