ASHINGTON MAN SENTENCED FOR HEADBUTTING PARTNER IN ROW OVER BABY
Martin Thain, a 32-year-old man from Warkworth Crescent, Ashington, has been sentenced for a violent domestic assault.
He headbutted his partner during an hour-long attack following a dispute over their eight-month-old baby.
The court heard that Thain left his partner with a head wound after dragging her by her hair and throwing objects at her during their argument.
He admitted to assault causing actual bodily harm.
The court sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with 150 hours of unpaid work.
Judge Amanda Rippon emphasized that there is no excuse for such behavior, describing domestic abusers as 'the lowest of the low.' She stated that the attack was very frightening for his partner and injury required medical treatment.
Thain expressed genuine remorse, which the court acknowledged as unusual.
The judge also warned that any breach of his suspended sentence would result in imprisonment.
The attack took place around 08:30 BST on May 20, after the victim asked Thain to wrap their baby in a blanket.
The violence included pinning her to the floor, dragging her by her hair, headbutting her, throwing objects, and smashing her head against a wall twice.
The court condemned Thain's actions, noting that even a single act of violence in a relationship is unacceptable and positions the abuser in the lowest social standing.
