MARTIN MUNNERLEY FROM RUBERY SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN WARWICK CROWN COURT
A 65-year-old man from Rubery, Martin Munnerley, has been convicted of serious historical child sex offences following a comprehensive investigation by West Midlands Police. The case, which spanned several decades, revealed disturbing allegations of sexual abuse involving two young girls from different time periods and locations. Munnerley's crimes include the rape and indecent assault of a teenage girl in the late 1980s, as well as a sexual assault on another girl in 2008, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior that persisted over many years. The legal proceedings against Munnerley culminated in a six-day trial at Warwick Crown Court. The jury, after deliberating for just over five hours, found him guilty of multiple charges, including rape and indecent assault from the 1980s, as well as sexual assault committed in 2008. The conviction was the result of meticulous police work, which involved revisiting earlier allegations that had initially been reported but not prosecuted due to insufficient evidence. The investigation was reinvigorated in 2019 when new evidence and victim testimonies emerged, prompting authorities to re-examine the case.
The initial complaint was made in 2014, when police received a report of inappropriate touching involving a young girl. However, at that time, the case was left unresolved because of a lack of concrete evidence. It was only after further inquiries, supported by a victim who came forward in 2011, that charges were eventually brought against Munnerley. The case underscores the importance of persistent investigation into allegations of abuse, regardless of how much time has passed.
Following his conviction, Munnerley was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison. The sentence reflects the gravity of his offences and the impact on the victims involved. Detective Constable Becci Jones expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I am delighted we were able to achieve justice for these women. They did not know each other and neither were aware of the other’s complaint. We will always investigate allegations of historical abuse no matter how long ago it happened.”
