EX-POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR LIFE FOR FIANCÉE'S MURDER
Martin Forshaw, a 27-year-old ex-police officer from Tottington, Bury, was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years for the murder of his fiancée, Claire Howarth, aged 31.Forshaw admitted to fatally striking Claire with a hammer just days before their wedding, which was to be held in St Lucia.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Forshaw had fabricated a car crash scenario to conceal his crime after attacking Claire multiple times with a lump hammer—at least five blows inflicted at their residence as they prepared to leave for the ceremony.
After the assault, Forshaw drove along quiet country roads before stopping at a house to seek assistance, only to abandon Claire’s battered body on a driveway.
Claire succumbed to serious head trauma and sustained 14 other injuries to her neck and head at Royal Bolton Hospital.
Forshaw defended his actions by claiming self-defense, asserting that Claire had attacked him first, but medical experts dismissed his account as 'completely implausible.' The judge called his actions a 'brutal killing' and stated that the conflict in their relationship likely contributed to his violent act, describing the murder as a 'tragic event.' Forshaw was immediately removed from his role with Cheshire Police after his arrest, and the court pointed out that his effort to portray the incident as an accident was suspicious, immediately recognized as an attempt to cover his tracks by police and emergency services.
