DAVID BAILEY FROM TOTTINGTON JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES AND INDECENT IMAGES IN BURY
In a significant case highlighting the ongoing fight against online child exploitation, David Bailey, a resident of Tottington, Bury, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for serious offenses involving child abuse and the possession of indecent images. Bailey, born on August 16, 1985, was found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl, as well as the possession and distribution of thousands of indecent images of children. The case came to light after a series of investigations that uncovered Bailey’s disturbing online activities. He had stored a vast collection of indecent images on his personal laptop, which included photographs of babies and young children of both genders. These images were categorized and referenced with usernames such as bi-pedo, bi-pedo2, kiddyfiddler, and twisterluvr1, indicating his involvement in sharing and viewing such material.
The investigation was initiated when the New Zealand Online Child Protection Team, which actively monitors online sex offenders, received intelligence on April 15, 2010. They identified a user with the handle “twistedluvr1” who was sharing indecent images and videos of children. Over a span of just 19 minutes, this individual shared at least 3,500 images, and several were downloaded by other users. The IP address linked to this activity was traced back to a residence in Bury.
Further inquiries led to the arrest of a suspect in July 2010, when authorities seized his computer. Analysis of the device revealed that he was sharing indecent images with six other UK residents. Among these users were individuals with the online aliases bi-pedo, bi-pedo2, and kiddyfiddler, all registered to the same address in Bury.
In September 2010, Greater Manchester Police executed a warrant at Bailey’s residence. The officers discovered that Bailey, a former caretaker, had been using his personal laptop within the premises. The investigation intensified as officers tracked Bailey to his home, where he was subsequently arrested. During the search, his laptop was seized and examined, revealing thousands of indecent images of children, including very young children and infants. The images were meticulously categorized, and references to the usernames previously mentioned were found within the files.
Further evidence was uncovered through chatroom logs, which indicated that Bailey had engaged in the sexual abuse of a child. This led to the identification of a six-year-old girl who later disclosed that Bailey had sexually assaulted her. The case was prosecuted with the full support of the Sexual Crime Unit.
Detective Constable Ciara Kilcommons of the Sexual Crime Unit emphasized the severity of Bailey’s actions, stating, “People like Bailey, who use the Internet to download and share indecent images of children, fuel the child sex abuse trade and create a market from which other sex offenders profit. Clearly, he is a dangerous individual, and the only appropriate punishment is a stint in prison.”
She further added, “I hope this case sends out a strong message to those who think they can hide behind a computer screen looking and making these images. Greater Manchester Police work very closely with agencies worldwide to track down and prosecute sex offenders, and thanks to our High-Tech Crime Unit’s advanced technology and dedicated officers, we will leave no stone unturned in uncovering evidence. There is no hiding place for criminals like Bailey.”
Bailey was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court on May 13, 2011. In addition to his prison term, he was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years, and disqualified from working with children for life. Authorities continue to urge victims of sexual assault or rape to seek help, providing contact details for Greater Manchester Police and St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre, which offers comprehensive support services around the clock.
