BEYOND REPREHENSIBLE MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF HIS THREE SISTERS IN THE 1970S

Warning: This article contains details that may be upsetting to some readers.

Three sisters from Galway have described their older brother as a “vile human being, a bully, a monster and pure evil” following his conviction for abuse committed in the 1970s.

During proceedings at the Central Criminal Court, it was revealed that Martin Davis, aged 67 and residing in Churchill, Clifden, was convicted of a single count of rape and eight counts of indecent assault, all on unknown dates between 1971 and 1981 at a residence in Letterfrank, County Galway.

Davis has no prior criminal record.

Judge Melanie Greally, delivering the sentence, remarked that the sexual offences had profoundly impacted all three women.

She acknowledged the deep trauma and suffering detailed in their victim impact statements.

Although Davis maintained his innocence and disputed the jury’s verdict, he is a married father with two children.

The judge had reviewed numerous testimonies previously submitted in court.

The judge highlighted that the aggravating circumstances included the lengthy period over which the abuse of Davis’s siblings occurred and the betrayal of trust involved violations of familial bonds and the trust placed in him by his parents, who had entrusted the girls into his care.

She also emphasised the significance of the offenders’ age differences, the fact that all abuse took place within the family home, and the lasting damage inflicted on the victims.

Mitigating factors considered included Davis’s lack of prior convictions, his stable family life, character references, ongoing employment, health issues, and the fact that he is now registered as a sex offender.

The court sentenced Davis to a total of eight years in prison, with the sentence applied retrospectively from the date of custody.

Addressing the victims, Judge Greally acknowledged the emotional hardship they endured and expressed well-wishes for their futures.

Outside the courtroom, the three women Carmel Conneely, Michelle Davis, and Audrey Stanley urged others to come forward, seek support, and not delay doing so.

They expressed relief that their voices had been heard, praised the Clifden Gardaí, and thanked the special victims unit and prosecutors for their assistance through the process.

Additional background included testimonies from Detective Garda Michael Griffin, who recounted Davis’s visit to Clifden Garda Station in April 2018 to report an incident involving his sister’s verbal abuse in a pub, which she confirmed, describing herself as having called him a "paedophile." Other sisters also lodged complaints.

Testimony detailed disturbing abuse: Carmel Conneely, then aged 10, was assaulted by Davis, aged 15-16, when he took her to her bedroom and raped her while she was crying.

On separate occasions, that same sister was digitally penetrated by Davis.

Another sister, Michelle, who was seven at the time, recounted being pulled into a back kitchen by Davis, then aged 23, who assaulted her anally and engaged in other inappropriate acts.

The third sister, Audrey Stanley, was abused starting at age nine, with Davis initiating non-consensual contact.

Davis was arrested and interviewed in September 2018, denying all charges and claiming his sisters were motivated by spite due to being excluded from their mother’s will.

The court heard Davis was a juvenile during much of the offences.

Carmel Conneely provided her victim impact statement, describing her initial happiness, subsequent shame, and fear, feeling culpable and silenced.

She called Davis "a monster" and remarked that he has shown no remorse, continuing to act as a bully.

She expressed hope to rebuild her life and mourn her mother's passing.

Audrey Stanley also shared her experience, expressing profound trauma and regret for her silence, which she believed allowed evil to thrive.

She admitted to protecting Davis through her silence, carrying guilt to her death.

The third sister’s statement relayed her suffering from emotional and psychological pain, including depression and anxiety.

She criticised Davis for escaping justice for so long and vowed not to let him dominate her life.

Defense lawyer Philip Rahn highlighted Davis’s health issues and submitted testimonials from family and former colleagues.

He asked the court to consider that Davis was a minor during much of the offending against some of the complainants.
