MAN NAMED MARK MOLLATT FROM CHELMSFORD ORDERED TO ATTEND SEX OFFENDERS COURSE FOR HAVING OVER 650 INDECENT IMAGES OF GIRLS
In June 2011, Mark Mollatt, a resident of Chelmsford, was mandated to attend a course for internet sex offenders after police discovered he possessed hundreds of indecent images of children.During proceedings at Chelmsford Crown Court, it was revealed that Mollatt was found with a total of 659 images depicting young girls aged approximately ten years and upwards, stored on his computer and various discs.
Mollatt initially attempted to shift blame by claiming another man was responsible for the images on his computer. However, he later admitted to downloading the images from the internet.
The court heard that police uncovered these images when Mollatt took his computer to a friend for repairs. The friend noticed some of the images and subsequently alerted authorities. Further images were uncovered during a search of Mollatt’s home on Laburnum Crescent, Kirby Cross.
Prosecutor Mark Lakin explained, “The majority of the images were classified as level one, which is the least serious category.”
Mollatt faced three charges of making indecent images of children. He was sentenced to a three-year supervision order, placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years, and ordered to pay £1,200 in costs.
Judge Charles Gratwicke stated that he was displaying leniency as Mollatt was actively taking steps to address his issues. However, the judge emphasized the gravity of such offenses, noting, “Anyone viewing those images could not feel anything but sickness and revulsion.”
Katrina Jamieson, defending Mollatt, explained that at the time of downloading the images, Mollatt was suffering from depression, consuming alcohol, and using drugs. She added, “He is ashamed of his behaviour and is taking positive steps to change his life.”
