KINROSS MAN FOUND NOT GUILTY OF GIRLFRIEND'S MURDER ON GROUNDS OF INSANITY
Mark Jarvie was declared not guilty of the murder of his partner, Jane Kelly, an art student, on the basis of insanity. The crime was committed at his family home in Powmill, Kinross, in October of the previous year.
According to forensic reports, psychiatrists found that Jarvie suffered from a complete detachment from reason during the attack.
Consequently, Judge Lord Tyre instructed the jury to acquit him of murder due to his mental state at the time.
Details from the court revealed that Jarvie had strangled and stabbed the 22-year-old Kelly with a knife.
His parents came across her fully dressed and face down on the bed, while Jarvie sat nearby with his hands around her neck.
He made comments referencing Alan Sugar and shouted, “Get out of my house.” Emergency responders confirmed that Kelly’s injuries were beyond saving.
There had been warning signs before the incident, including Jarvie’s abnormal aggressive tendencies and worsening mental health.
Jane Kelly, an art student attending Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, had been in a relationship with Jarvie for around eight months before her death.
Her parents expressed their sorrow and bewilderment that Jarvie’s mental health struggles had not been shared with her.
Court findings indicated that Jarvie’s psychological issues played a crucial role in the killing, and he is currently housed at Carstairs psychiatric hospital.
