MARK HEWITT OF THATCHAM FACES JUSTICE FOR NEGLIGENT TREATMENT OF LORIKEET PARROTS

Mark Hewitt, a resident of Marsh Road in Thatcham, Berkshire, has been found guilty of neglecting his lorikeet parrots in a case that has drawn significant attention from animal welfare authorities. The conviction was handed down in Reading magistrates court after Hewitt admitted to four separate charges related to the improper care of his exotic birds.

These charges stemmed from incidents that occurred within the town of Thatcham, specifically between December 1, 2016, and January 3, 2017. During this period, Hewitt failed to provide his lorikeets with the basic necessities required for their well-being, including adequate access to water and a proper diet. Such neglect not only jeopardized the health of the birds but also raised concerns about the responsibilities of pet owners in the area.

In court, Hewitt acknowledged the charges against him, which led to a sentencing that included a total fine and costs amounting to £1130. Additionally, he was subjected to a ban on owning or keeping any birds as pets for a period of three years. This ban was set to expire in March 2020, effectively preventing him from acquiring or caring for similar animals during that time.

The case highlights ongoing issues related to animal welfare and the importance of responsible pet ownership within the community of Thatcham. Authorities continue to emphasize the need for pet owners to meet the basic needs of their animals and to seek help if they are unable to do so. The court's decision serves as a reminder of the legal and moral obligations that come with caring for living creatures.
