MARK DAVISON FROM ASHINGTON BUSTED FOR BREACHING SEX OFFENDER ORDERS IN NORTHUMBERLAND

In November 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Mark Davison, a man from Ashington in Northumberland, who was found to have violated multiple conditions of his sexual offences prevention order and his sex offender registration requirements. The case highlights the ongoing challenges in managing convicted sex offenders and protecting vulnerable members of society.

According to court proceedings, Davison had established a relationship with a woman he met on the dating app Badoo. The woman, who was a mother of two young girls, believed she had found a genuine connection with him. However, the reality was far more troubling. The court heard that Davison had spent time with her children, but always under supervision, and he was never left alone with them. Despite this, he had not fully disclosed the extent of his criminal history to her.

Davison had explicitly mentioned to the woman that he was subject to an order related to sex offences, but he failed to reveal the full scope of his convictions. The court was informed that he had a history of serious sexual offences, including a conviction in 2004 for the rape of a child under 16, which occurred when he was himself a youth. He received a referral order for this offence. Later, in 2011, Davison was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of two counts of sexual activity with a female child. Following this, he was placed under a sexual offences prevention order that was to remain in effect indefinitely.

Further violations occurred in July 2017, when Davison was convicted of breaching the sexual offences prevention order. He received a 14-month prison sentence for having unsupervised contact with a child, which was a direct violation of the restrictions placed upon him. Despite these legal restrictions, Davison continued to have contact with children, including staying at the woman’s home without registering this address with the police, in July and August of that year.

His actions prompted a court hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, where Judge Stephen Earl sentenced him to 22 months in prison. The judge emphasized that the orders Davison breached were specifically designed to shield society’s most vulnerable, particularly children, from predators like him. He stated, “These orders are meant to protect children from sexual predators. The defendant falls into that group by virtue of his 2011 conviction. The protection of the public is the court’s principal concern given his background.”

Judge Earl further condemned Davison’s conduct, noting that he had visited the woman’s home when she was unaware of the risks he posed and had her visit his home under similar circumstances. “This is about risk management, and people are entitled to make decisions themselves,” the judge said. “In relation to a sexual predator with children in the past, a person is entitled to make that decision with regard to the facts. He took that decision out of her hands for his own selfish reasons. This is a concerted effort to flout the orders put in place to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.”

The court also heard details from the prosecution, Neil Pallister, who explained that the woman’s two youngest children were living with her when she met Davison in July. She confirmed that during their relationship, he disclosed to her that he had a criminal record but did not fully reveal all his previous convictions. He mentioned, in broad terms, that he was subject to an order related to sex offences but withheld the specifics.

During their relationship, Davison stayed overnight at her home five times, with her children present each time. On other occasions, he visited her residence when the children were there, but he was never left unsupervised with them. The woman also recounted taking the children to Davison’s home twice, where they stayed overnight, sleeping in his bed while she and Davison slept on the sofa. When arrested, Davison claimed he had tried to contact his supervising officer about staying at the woman’s house but did not leave a message, indicating an attempt to circumvent the restrictions placed upon him.

This case underscores the importance of strict enforcement of sex offender orders and the ongoing risks posed by individuals with a history of sexual crimes, especially when they attempt to breach legal safeguards meant to protect children and the community at large.
