HEMEL HEMPSTEAD MAN JAILED OVER ELDER FINANCIAL ABUSE
A man who took more than £1.4 million from the elderly by fabricating a story about his mother’s death was jailed.Marios Demetriou, 51, of Three Stiles, befriended an elderly victim in 2012, claiming he needed money to fight a court case related to the murder of his mother.
The victim provided him with several hundred thousand pounds and also recruited others to help fund this false legal fight.
Demetriou misused the funds on gambling and was arrested in January 2018 after being reported to the police.
He was sentenced to six years in prison at Wood Green Crown Court on May 30, 2019.
Detective inspector Rob Burns from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit said: “Demetriou exploited their good natures to steal savings meant for their retirement.
This conviction will protect vulnerable people and send a strong message to fraudsters.”
