HEMEL HEMPSTEAD WOMAN JAILED FOR THE BRUTAL MURDER OF HER DAUGHTER
In Hemel Hempstead, a woman named Shilyrand Charigwati was convicted for the murder of her two-year-old daughter, Roselyn.The death, which took place in April 2024, involved the child being suffocated, and the case was brought to Luton Crown Court.
Charigwati initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder, citing mental health problems and claiming she could not remember the details of the incident.
Despite her pleas, Judge Mrs Justice Heather Williams found her guilty of murder and sentenced her to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 16 years.
The judge described her actions as a severe breach of trust and suggested that revenge related to her marital issues may have been a motive.
It was also noted that Charigwati had been suffering from stress and depression following her separation from Roselyn’s father and the subsequent loss of custody.
The court highlighted the child's extreme vulnerability at such a young age and described her mother’s conduct as a devastating violation of her trust.
Roselyn’s father, Washington, read an emotional victim statement, expressing his grief and describing his daughter's joyful nature and the positive impact she had on those around her.
The case gained media coverage as Charigwati was sentenced after a guilty verdict in a trial that underscored concerns about mental health and familial struggles, underscoring the tragic loss of a young life.
