WASHINGTON ACCOUNTANT MARC KEATING CAUGHT IN SEX CHAT SCAM WITH PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS
In September 2018, a serious incident unfolded involving Marc Keating, a 26-year-old accountant from Washington, who found himself at the center of a criminal investigation after engaging in explicit sexual conversations with what he believed were underage boys on a popular dating application.Keating, who had qualified as a senior accountant and was employed at a firm in Washington, was lured into a trap set by an organization known as Guardians of the North, which operates as paedophile hunters.
The court heard that over a span of just over one week, from the end of May to early June of the previous year, Keating communicated with three decoy profiles on Grindr, a widely used dating app.
During these interactions, Keating believed he was speaking with boys aged 13 and 14.
The conversations were highly sexual in nature, with Keating asking one of the decoys if he was a virgin and suggesting various intimate acts they could perform together.
The exchanges also involved discussions about exchanging photographs and even meeting in person, which raised serious concerns about his intentions.
Prosecutor Michael Bunch detailed that Keating had sent explicit images that revealed his true identity, including his phone number.
The decoy organization subsequently conducted a search of his mobile number on Facebook, which uncovered further details about him.
The images on his social media profile matched those he had sent to the decoys, leading to police involvement.
Following the investigation, authorities took action, and Keating was charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor.
He admitted to three offences related to these interactions.
As a result, he was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court to a six-month prison term, suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid community service, sign the sex offenders’ register, and adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for the next seven years.
During the sentencing, Recorder Margia Mostafa emphasized the gravity of Keating’s actions, noting the highly sexual nature of the conversations and the potential for meeting the decoys in person.
She pointed out that Keating had no prior criminal record and expressed hope that he might return to work as an accountant in the future, despite the serious charges against him.
Keating’s conduct has led to his dismissal from his previous employment for gross misconduct, and he now faces the long-term consequences of his actions in the criminal justice system.
