MALCOLM BARNARD FROM CROSTWICK AND LEIGH CAUGHT IN HORRIFIC PAEDOPHILE STING ON CANVEY

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Crostwick and Leigh, Malcolm Barnard, a 49-year-old man, found himself in court facing serious allegations related to online child exploitation. The charges stemmed from a sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters, specifically the group Secret Whispers UK, who set up decoy profiles on social media to catch predators attempting to contact minors.

According to court records, Barnard believed he was communicating with teenage girls aged 13 and 14. In reality, these profiles were controlled by undercover investigators aiming to identify and apprehend individuals engaging in illegal activities involving minors. The incident that led to Barnard’s arrest occurred in February when he initiated contact with two separate decoy accounts. During these conversations, Barnard was warned by the decoys about their actual ages, but he continued to engage in increasingly inappropriate and sexualized exchanges.

Prosecutor Andrew Jackson QC detailed the disturbing nature of Barnard’s communications. He explained that Barnard first contacted a profile named “Rebecca,” believing her to be a 13-year-old girl. The court heard how Barnard’s conversations with Rebecca became progressively more explicit. Jackson stated, “The conversations became increasingly sexualised. He then volunteered he wasn’t wearing any pants and his zip might come undone. He then started sending photographs firstly of himself wearing trousers and then of himself with his hand in his shorts and then of himself exposed.”

Further, Barnard explicitly told Rebecca that their interactions should remain secret, which is a common tactic used by predators to prevent victims from seeking help. Five days later, Barnard contacted another decoy, this time named “Holly,” whom he believed to be 14 years old. The court revealed that within minutes of their conversation, Barnard was discussing pleasuring himself and proceeded to send explicit images of himself in the act. He also sent a video of himself performing sexual acts, along with instructions for “Holly” on how she could do the same.

Authorities tracked Barnard to a car park on Canvey Island, where he was confronted by the decoys. During the confrontation, Barnard admitted to the illegal activities he had engaged in. The court was told that Barnard, who now resides in Crostwick, Norfolk, had moved from Leigh following the circulation of a video showing him in a car park on Dovercliff Road, Canvey, which was also part of the evidence presented by Secret Whispers UK.

Judge Samantha Cohen addressed the court, emphasizing the seriousness of Barnard’s actions. She stated, “Offending of this kind when there are real children is all too prevalent and causes serious harm. Although there were no real children, it cannot be said there was no harm because the women speaking to you must have felt stress and anger at your behaviour.”

As a result of his conviction, Barnard was sentenced to a six-month prison term, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, he is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for ten years and adhere to strict conditions that restrict his access to computers and contact with minors. He was also ordered to pay £740 in court costs.

Earlier in June 2019, Barnard had already admitted to attempting to groom children during an online sting. He was confronted on Canvey Island and appeared at Basildon Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to inciting a 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity and attempting to cause a 14-year-old girl to watch sexual acts. The court heard that Barnard had been compelled to move from Leigh to Crostwick, Norfolk, after a video of him in Dovercliff Road car park was circulated by Secret Whispers UK.

During the court proceedings, Barnard expressed remorse, stating, “I have done the worst thing ever. You’re going to hate me, everyone is going to hate me. I won’t be ever coming to work again, I will be put in prison, I am finished, my life is over.” His defense attorney, Steven Levy, described Barnard as a “man of good character” with no prior convictions and requested a pre-sentence report to be prepared. The judge adjourned sentencing until July 4 to allow for this report, warning Barnard that the final sentence could still be an immediate custodial sentence. Barnard maintained that he had never had unsupervised contact with children under 18.

Initially, Barnard faced additional allegations of assault and dangerous driving, but these charges were dropped after further investigation. The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community efforts to protect minors from exploitation.
