2012:ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT JAILED AFTER RAPING WOMAN IN DESERTED STREET
A foreign national who committed a sexual assault on a woman in an isolated side street has received an eight-year prison sentence.Court proceedings revealed that the victim, a 26-year-old mother, believed she was in mortal danger during the attack.
The incident occurred while she was out celebrating her birthday with friends in Leigh.
Following the assault, she experienced significant trauma, leading her to develop a fear of going out alone, including fears about shopping trips.
Additionally, the incident has impacted her personal relationships, and she has been prescribed antidepressants and counseling to cope.
Judge Graham Morrow QC described the offender’s actions, stating: “You knew she was likely intoxicated; you attempted to solicit sex from her.
When she declined, you forcibly assaulted her, grabbing from behind and covering her mouth as she tried to scream.” The assault took place when the woman had stepped into a narrow alley to urinate and was crouching down; it was at this moment that Mullaaga approached and assaulted her.
Prosecutor Robert Golinski explained that although the woman did not fight back, fearing for her life, her screams drew the attention of a nearby passer-by.
Mullaaga, from Manley Park, Leigh, denied raping her but was found guilty after a trial.
He was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and, despite serving an eight-year sentence, will be deported automatically, as he arrived in the UK in 2006 following a rejected asylum claim.
