LUKE BARRETT FROM ALFRETON CAUGHT IN DISTURBING ONLINE PREDATORY BEHAVIOR IN DERBYSHIRE
In April 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Luke Barrett, a 35-year-old man from Alfreton, Derbyshire, who engaged in inappropriate online communications with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. The incident unfolded through exchanges on WhatsApp and the online forum Chatiw, where Barrett repeatedly asked the decoy about her attire and personal development.Despite the undercover officer clearly indicating that her persona was that of a young teenager, Barrett persisted in his inappropriate inquiries. He asked her to send pictures and inquired about her clothing, crossing boundaries that should never be breached. Prosecutor Julia King detailed that Barrett also inquired about her physical development, specifically asking about breast growth and whether she had pubic hair, further emphasizing his predatory intent.
Barrett’s arrest took place on April 17 of the previous year, with police investigations revealing that the offending behavior occurred between April 13 and April 15. During the investigation, authorities uncovered evidence that Barrett had successfully communicated with a real child while under a sexual harm prevention order. However, efforts to trace this actual child were unsuccessful, leaving some aspects of his offending pattern unresolved.
Further examination of Barrett’s digital devices revealed the presence of indecent images of children, adding to the severity of his offenses. At the time of his arrest, it was also noted that Barrett was subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which was issued due to his prior history involving indecent and extreme pornography. Court proceedings revealed that the true extent of Barrett’s learning difficulties had not been fully identified when the order was initially imposed.
During the court hearing, Barrett pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, creating an indecent photograph of a child, and engaging in sexual communication with a child. Recorder Michael Auty QC decided to adjourn sentencing until a report from probation services could be prepared, emphasizing the importance of understanding Barrett’s mental health and learning difficulties before finalizing his punishment.
In addressing Barrett directly, the judge acknowledged the public’s likely desire for immediate imprisonment but expressed hope that a more rehabilitative approach could prevent future offenses. He stated, “There will be members of the public who will say you should be immediately sent to prison. I am hoping to put a package together that might prevent any repetition of this. I recognize that during the last community order the true extent of your difficulties had not been properly assessed. You’ve kept out of trouble for a year now – if I can do something more positive than simply lock you up then I’m prepared to in the hope of preventing any children out there from suffering.”
Barrett’s sentencing has been scheduled for May, with the court awaiting further reports to determine the appropriate course of action to address his behavior and underlying issues.
