TEENAGER HANDED LIFE SENTENCE FOR MURDERING EX-GIRLFRIEND
Logan MacPhail, aged 17 and from Birtley in Gateshead, is required to serve a minimum of 17 years behind bars.A young man received a life sentence after being convicted of the murder of 15-year-old Holly Newton in Hexham.
On the evening of Friday, January 27, 2023, emergency services responded to reports of a serious assault involving a boy and girl in the town centre’s Priestpopple area, around 5:10 pm.
Upon arrival, police found the two victims in an alleyway nearby, both suffering from multiple stab wounds.
They were swiftly transported to hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Holly, who lived in Haltwhistle, died from her injuries, which included 36 stab wounds.
Her companion, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, received treatment for his injuries and was later discharged.
Police officers quickly detained Logan MacPhail at the scene, after he was apprehended in a bus shelter by vigilant passers-by.
The subsequent investigation involved CCTV footage analysis and witness interviews, revealing that Holly's ex-boyfriend was the attacker.
It was established that MacPhail, armed with a kitchen knife and wearing a snood, travelled from Gateshead and followed Holly and her friends for about 45 minutes, during which they were unaware of his presence.
He also communicated with Holly’s friends via voice messages to persuade her to meet him in person.
While Holly and her friend were on the town’s high street, MacPhail approached and asked her to discuss things in a nearby alley.
Following him, Holly was violently attacked by MacPhail, who stabbed her multiple times.
Hearing her scream, her friend intervened but was also stabbed in the shoulder and leg.
MacPhail was charged shortly afterward with Holly's murder and additionally with grievous bodily harm with intent against her friend.
The accused, then 16, had previously admitted to manslaughter and possession of a bladed article but denied the murder and the GBH charge.
In August, a jury at Newcastle Crown Court found MacPhail guilty of both crimes after a six-week trial.
He appeared before the same court for sentencing over two days and was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, with a minimum term of 17 years.
Concurrently, he received a five-year sentence for GBH with intent.
