LLOYD THORNTON FROM BURY ST EDMUNDS JAILED FOR GROPING FEMALES IN GREAT YARMOUTH

In May 2015, Lloyd Thornton, a man from Bury St Edmunds, was sentenced to a 42-month prison term after being found guilty of multiple sexual assault charges involving young women in Great Yarmouth. The court heard that Thornton, aged 56, engaged in inappropriate and predatory behavior towards four females, some as young as 15 years old, during incidents that left the victims deeply distressed.

According to the prosecution, led by John Morgans, Thornton made unwelcome sexual comments to the young women, which contributed to a pattern of troubling conduct. The court was informed that Thornton's misconduct included pinching one woman on the bottom and lifting her skirt without consent. Witnesses described his behavior as “pervy and creepy,” highlighting the unsettling nature of his actions.

Further details revealed that while Thornton was on bail for previous sex assault allegations involving three other females, he continued his inappropriate behavior. During a separate encounter, he groped another young woman and ominously remarked, “That will be another allegation,” indicating a disturbing awareness of his misconduct. The victims expressed that Thornton’s actions had a lasting impact on their confidence and emotional well-being, with many feeling overwhelmed and distressed by his behavior.

Thornton, who resides on Botolph’s Lane in Bury St Edmunds, admitted to the charges of sexual assault on four females. His conviction led to his imprisonment and placement on the sex offenders’ register. Additionally, he was ordered to comply with a sexual offences prevention order, aimed at restricting his future conduct.

During the sentencing, Judge Peter Jacobs emphasized that Thornton had exploited vulnerable females, a factor that contributed to the severity of his punishment. The court’s decision underscored the seriousness with which such offenses are regarded, especially when committed by individuals in positions of trust or authority.

Representing Thornton, lawyer Jonathan Goodman acknowledged the gravity of his client’s actions but attempted to contextualize them by suggesting that Thornton’s behavior was a product of a different era. Goodman stated, “He does not want to minimize his actions, but Thornton came from a different time. He did not realize how unacceptable such conduct is today.” He also highlighted the personal toll on Thornton, claiming that he faced ruin and bankruptcy as a result of the legal proceedings, stating, “He has ruined his reputation and is financially ruined as well.”

Judge Jacobs concluded the hearing by condemning Thornton’s exploitation of vulnerable women, reinforcing the message that such behavior will be met with strict penalties. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding individuals from predatory conduct, regardless of the offender’s background or intentions.
