The case involved Lloyd Jenkins, aged 34 from The Ponds, Hundleton, Pembrokeshire, who committed a serious domestic offence. On October 17, 2022, Jenkins intentionally set fire to his former girlfriend’s flat after assaulting her by throwing a canvas at her head.
He was intoxicated at the time.
The fires included two near the oven and another on the material on the floor, causing damage.
Prior to this, the victim had gone to a neighbor’s home following Jenkins’s assault.
His actions caused her and her children to become homeless.
Later, Jenkins returned to the flat demanding her phone to contact his brother, and during this encounter, he lost his temper and threw a canvas photograph, striking her in the head.
After she left, Jenkins destroyed several items such as a television and a table, then ignited synthetic materials on and inside the oven and the linoleum floor.
He then escaped as the smoke alarm went off, but the fire brigade arrived to find smoke coming from the flat.
Firefighters also rescued the victim’s dog from the scene.
Jenkins was arrested later, denying the offences.
At Swansea Crown Court, he was found guilty of arson reckless as to whether life was endangered, battery, and criminal damage.
His previous convictions for violent acts were acknowledged.
The victim reported that her life was significantly impacted, with her children unsettled and suffering nightmares.
Judge Catherine Richards noted that Jenkins’s prior criminal record, intoxicated state, and the domestic setting of the offence were aggravating factors.
The court sentenced Jenkins to four years in prison, emphasizing the serious risk to residents and the severity of the incident.
