OFFENDER LLOYD BYFIELD JAILED FOR LIFE AFTER VICIOUS MURDER
Lloyd Byfield, aged 48, was found guilty of the killing of 26-year-old Leighann Duffy in September, after stabbing her 14 times during a break-in at her residence in Walthamstow, east London. In the court proceedings at the Old Bailey, it was revealed that Byfield confessed to carrying out the assault, and he faces a minimum prison sentence of 26 and a half years, with the possibility of never being released.
The court noted that Byfield was a Jamaican national with a criminal history, including a conviction for assaulting another woman with a chisel, which earned him a 30-month prison sentence in 2005.
The judge criticized authorities for the failure to deport Byfield after those convictions, pointing out that while he was scheduled for deportation, the process was not undertaken for reasons that remain unclear.
Although he was granted leave to remain after marrying in 2002, he disappeared following a deportation order issued in 2007.
He was re-arrested following the murder, which was reportedly linked to a dispute over drug dealings.
Leighann Duffy's injuries proved fatal two days later when she died in hospital.
The court also highlighted that Byfield had previously pursued a relationship with her.
Witnesses, including a young girl of six years old, witnessed the brutal attack and sustained minor injuries.
The incident has been described as profoundly disturbing, with the Home Office expressing regret over its failure to deport Byfield sooner, a lapse that might have prevented the tragic event.
