LIAM BROCK AND CHARLOTTE HAYWARD FROM NUNEATON SENTENCED FOR CHILD NEGLECT AFTER HOSPITALIZATION INCIDENT

Liam Brock, aged 29 and a resident of King Edward Road in Nuneaton, has been handed down an 18-month prison sentence after being found guilty of child neglect. The case stemmed from a serious incident involving a young child who was admitted to hospital with head injuries on June 2, 2022.

Initial reports from Brock and Charlotte Hayward, who was also involved, claimed that the child's injuries resulted from a fall from a chair. However, further investigations revealed a different and more troubling story. Forensic analysis of blood samples taken from both Brock and Hayward detected benzoylecgonine, a chemical compound that indicates recent or ongoing cocaine use or recovery from cocaine intoxication. This evidence cast doubt on their initial explanations and raised concerns about their state of sobriety at the time of the incident.

Video footage played a crucial role in uncovering the truth. The footage showed that the child had managed to climb out of an open window and subsequently fell. The fall was witnessed by a bystander who saw the child tumble from the window and then attempted to alert Brock and Hayward by knocking on their door. Unfortunately, their response was unresponsive, and no help was immediately forthcoming. It was only later that Hayward took the initiative to take the injured child to hospital for medical treatment.

During the investigation, authorities emphasized the importance of responsible adult supervision, especially when caring for children under the age of seven. The Child Abuse, Trafficking, and Exploitation team highlighted that being sober and alert is essential to prevent such accidents and ensure the safety of vulnerable children.

Both Liam Brock and Charlotte Hayward admitted their guilt in the case. Their plea was heard at Warwick Crown Court, where they received their sentences on April 26. In addition to their prison terms, they were ordered to pay a surcharge of £156 each. The case underscores the serious consequences of neglect and the dangers posed when caregivers are under the influence of substances while responsible for young children.
