LEWIS MITCHELL FROM YEOVIL FACES SERIOUS CHARGES OVER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AT TAUNTON CROWN COURT
In March 2018, Lewis Mitchell, a 20-year-old resident of Seaton Road in Yeovil, was brought before Somerset Magistrates at Yeovil to face charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images and videos of children. The case was serious enough that the magistrates decided they lacked the jurisdiction to impose the appropriate sentence, leading to Mitchell's transfer to Taunton Crown Court for sentencing proceedings.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, admitting that between December 15, 2016, and June 9, 2017, he had engaged in the creation and possession of a significant number of indecent images and movies depicting children.
Specifically, he acknowledged making 11 indecent images and 19 movies classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe level of child exploitation material.
Additionally, he admitted to producing eight images and ten movies in Category B, along with a further 127 images and three movies in Category C, which are considered less serious but still constitute serious offenses.
Prosecutor Julyan Stephens provided details of the police investigation, revealing that law enforcement officers visited Mitchell’s residence in Yeovil in August of the previous year.
During the search, Mitchell handed over a mobile phone, which was subsequently analyzed by forensic experts.
The analysis uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images and movies of children across all categories of severity, totaling 146 images and 32 movies.
Of these, 24 were immediately accessible to anyone using the device, while the remaining files required specialized software to recover, indicating a deliberate effort to conceal or restrict access to the material.
Despite the gravity of the charges, it was noted that Mitchell had no prior criminal convictions and was considered to have been of good character before these allegations surfaced.
The magistrates, however, determined that their sentencing powers were insufficient to address the severity of the case.
Consequently, they ordered Mitchell to be transferred to Taunton Crown Court, where he is scheduled to appear for sentencing on March 31.
In the interim, the court requested a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service to assist in determining an appropriate punishment.
Mitchell was released on unconditional bail and was ordered to sign onto the national Sex Offenders Register within three days of the court hearing.
He will also be subject to specific notification requirements for a period to be decided by the sentencing judge, reflecting the ongoing monitoring and restrictions placed on individuals convicted of such offenses.
