LEWIS HOBBS FROM SWADLINCOTE AND UTTOXETER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN DERBYSHIRE
In a significant legal development, Lewis Hobbs, a man with ties to Swadlincote and Uttoxeter, was formally sentenced on Monday, March 29, after pleading guilty to multiple child sex offenses committed against a girl under the age of 16. The sentencing took place at Derby Crown Court, where Hobbs was handed a custodial sentence of three years in prison.Hobbs, aged 28, appeared remotely from his residence to face the court, dressed in a white shirt and black tie, during a brief 15-minute hearing. His guilty pleas encompassed eight charges related to sexual misconduct with a minor, including six counts of engaging in sexual activity with the girl—an act that involved full sexual relations—and two counts of inciting or causing a child to participate in sexual acts. The victim’s mother was also present via the remote link, providing testimony and supporting the case, as her daughter was under 16 during the period of abuse.
At the time of the offenses, Lewis Hobbs was employed as a supervisor at Granville Academy, located in Woodville, Swadlincote. His role primarily involved covering absences within the school's Physical Education department. The school’s management confirmed that Hobbs was dismissed from his position without notice in November 2019, following the allegations and subsequent legal proceedings. Ian McNeilly, the chief executive of The de Ferrers Trust, which oversees the school, issued a statement emphasizing the importance of safeguarding: “Lewis Hobbs was dismissed from his employment at Granville Academy without notice in November 2019. This terrible case serves as a stark reminder to all individuals working with children that vigilance and safeguarding are paramount to protect those in our care.”
During the court proceedings, the presiding judge, Recorder William Harbage QC, acknowledged the seriousness of the charges and the likelihood of a custodial sentence. The court requested a pre-sentence report and a victim impact statement to better understand the circumstances and the effects of the offenses. The prosecution, led by John Farmer, highlighted the gravity of the case and the need for comprehensive information before sentencing. The hearing was adjourned until March 5 to allow for these reports.
Hobbs, who resides on Heathfield Road in Uttoxeter, was informed by the court that he would be placed on the sex offender register, a legal requirement for individuals convicted of such offenses. The identity of the victim remains protected by law to ensure her privacy and safety. The court’s decision underscores the severity of the crimes committed and the ongoing efforts to safeguard minors from exploitation and abuse.
