MAN JAILED FOR MORE THAN 13 YEARS FOR RAPE
A man was sentenced to over 13 years in prison for serious violent crimes against a woman, which included rape and assault.Leighton Smith, who resides on Lancaster Road in Shrewsbury, received his sentence at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday, June 1.
The charges against him included one count of rape, five counts of causing actual bodily harm, and one count of witness intimidation.
The court heard during an earlier trial that in 2024, Smith, aged 36, inflicted a series of abusive acts on his victim, with the authorities only becoming aware of the incidents in 2025.
Following an inquiry by Shropshire's Protecting People Unit, Smith was taken into custody and formally charged.
He denied the allegations, leading to a trial in which a jury found him guilty in May.
On Monday, the judge sentenced Smith to approximately 13 and a half years in prison.
Additionally, a 15-year restraining order was imposed to protect the victim, and Smith was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
