MAN SUBJECTED EX-PARTNER TO 'CRUEL AND NASTY ATTACK' IN FRONT OF CHILDREN
A MAN who subjected his ex-partner to a “cruel and nasty” attack in front of children after a row over a cinema trip has been jailed.
Smith and the victim had split up a couple of months prior to the incident, which happened when he went to pick up their son to take him to the cinema.
During the assault, Smith strangled the victim and hit her with a saucepan in her St Helens home.
He also punched her to the head, spat on her, and grabbed her by the hair, throwing her to the floor.
The incident lasted around 10 minutes, resulting in bruising and a lump on her head.
The court heard Smith has four previous convictions for 11 offences, with only one for violence in 2007 as a juvenile.
He was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment, serving 40% of the sentence, and was disqualified from driving for two years.
The judge described his attack as “cruel and nasty,” highlighting the psychological impact on the victim and her children, with the victim feeling she had to move out seeking refuge and now feeling unsafe at home.
