LEE WRIGHT FROM SPENNYMOOR STRUCK OFF AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY IN DURHAM
In September 2003, a junior nurse named Lee Wright, based in Spennymoor, faced severe professional repercussions after being found guilty of possessing and downloading explicit images of children. The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of the material and the international scope of the investigation.Wright, aged 24 at the time, was discovered to have stored thousands of indecent photographs depicting young girls and boys as young as three years old. These images were linked to a US-based website that was part of a larger international paedophile network. The police investigation was initiated as part of Operation Ore, a major crackdown on online child exploitation, following a tip-off from the FBI that led authorities to Wright’s activities.
Authorities uncovered that Wright had paid approximately $25 to download up to 1,500 images over a span of three days. In total, investigators found more than 8,500 indecent pictures on his home computer, revealing a disturbing pattern of abuse and exploitation. The images included highly disturbing scenes, with children tied to trees or crucifixes, engaged in sexual acts with both boys and girls under the age of 16. Some of the children depicted appeared to be as young as three or four years old, with others being five at most. The content was described by police as extreme and quite disturbing.
Wright was convicted in October of the previous year on ten charges related to making indecent photographs. Despite the severity of his crimes, he was spared a custodial sentence. However, his professional career was abruptly ended when he was dismissed from his position on an adult ward at the University Hospital of North Durham in Durham City, where he had only been employed for two months.
Following his conviction, Wright’s address in Marmaduke Street, Spennymoor, was no longer his residence. The Nursing and Midwifery Council conducted a disciplinary hearing to assess his fitness to practice. The panel found him guilty of professional misconduct and, in his absence, decided to strike him off the nursing register. The decision was made after attempts to locate him failed. Chairman Valeric Morrison emphasized the importance of public trust in healthcare professionals, stating, “The public have the right to receive care from reputable professionals who they can trust in the most intimate and vulnerable circumstances. Lee Wright has failed to justify this public trust. His name will be removed from the register with immediate effect.”
During police interviews, Wright claimed that he was aware of the indecent photographs being present on his computer but insisted he had not had the time to delete them. He also argued that he did not knowingly store such images and suggested that they might have been downloaded inadvertently while he was downloading adult pornography. Wright’s refusal to attend the disciplinary hearing in person was based on his request for the case to be heard privately, citing concerns that the proceedings would cause him embarrassment, humiliation, and potentially endanger his health. However, the panel rejected his request for a private hearing, proceeding with the case in public to uphold transparency and accountability in the disciplinary process.
