LEE OWEN EXPOSES HIMSELF IN BASILDON'S FELMORES AREA TO SCHOOLGIRLS
In October 2012, a disturbing case emerged involving Lee Owen, a 31-year-old man from Wood Green, Basildon, who admitted to repeatedly exposing himself to young girls in the Felmores area as they made their way to school.The victims, aged 11 and 12, were subjected to this unsettling behavior on multiple occasions, leaving at least one of them visibly shaken and distressed by the encounters.
One of the young girls demonstrated quick thinking and awareness during the incident by noting down the registration number of Owen’s vehicle.
She then handed this information over to her grandmother, which proved crucial in the subsequent police investigation.
Thanks to this vital lead, law enforcement officials were able to locate Owen and bring him into custody.
During police interviews, Owen confessed to all the other similar incidents, acknowledging his actions and their impact.
Owen appeared before Southend Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to three charges of public exposure with the intent to be seen.
Prosecutor Suzanne Stringer outlined the case, stating, “He made full admissions to these offences and at least ten others over this period of time where police haven’t been able to trace specific victims, which is why we’ve only charged with three particular offences.” According to the prosecution, Owen explained that he had been experiencing significant stress and difficulties in his personal life, particularly with his partner, which he claimed contributed to his behavior.
He reportedly told police, “After I’ve done it I really feel bad,” indicating remorse for his actions.
These incidents took place in various locations within the Felmores area, including Craylands, Northlands Park, and an underpass off Rectory Road.
Prosecutors expressed concern not only for the safety of the public, especially young schoolchildren, but also for Owen’s own safety if he were to be released back into the community.
As a precaution, the Crown is considering applying for a Sexual Offences Prevention Order to prevent Owen from committing similar offences in the future.
Defense attorney Miss Cole, who declined to give her full name, stated that Owen was unsure why he committed these acts and emphasized that he was not attempting to justify or excuse his behavior.
Owen was remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced at Basildon Crown Court during the week beginning November 12.
