LEE DEMPSEY FROM KIRKCALDY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING PUPIL IN GLENROTHES

A teacher from a high school in Glenrothes, which is part of the Kirkcaldy area, has been sentenced to prison following a serious breach of trust involving a minor student. Lee Dempsey, aged 45, was found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and predatory behavior towards a pupil, actions that have been described by the court as an egregious violation of the trust placed in him as an educator.

According to court records, the misconduct took place at Dempsey’s residence on Fleming Place. The investigation revealed that the initial contact between Dempsey and the pupil was made through Snapchat, where he used an alias to conceal his identity. Despite his attempts to hide his involvement, evidence showed that Dempsey later met the girl in person, first in a car park and subsequently at his home, in the year 2023. Dempsey claimed that his interactions with the pupil were solely for academic assistance, but prosecutors argued that his actions went far beyond that, involving sexual activity or conduct directed towards the minor while he was in a position of trust.

During the court proceedings, it was emphasized that Dempsey’s conduct was a flagrant breach of the responsibilities entrusted to him as a teacher. Sheriff Steven Borthwick underscored the importance of societal trust in educators and highlighted that such breaches warrant the maximum penalties available under the law. As a result, Dempsey was sentenced to 12 months in jail. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. The court acknowledged that Dempsey was a first-time offender with no prior criminal record and that he admitted to creating a Snapchat account under an alias, although he identified himself in the initial message.

In court, Dempsey arrived on crutches and was masked, indicating possible health concerns or other issues. His defense lawyer argued for a non-custodial sentence, emphasizing his otherwise clean employment history and the fact that he was a first-time offender. However, the sheriff rejected this plea, citing the severity of the breach of trust and the emotional harm caused to the victim.
