MAN JAILED FOR ATTACKS ON FORMER PARTNER AND CONTROLLING/COERCIVE BEHAVIOUR
A man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for ongoing violent and controlling behavior towards his former partner.Lee Carran, 32, from Woodlane in Falmouth, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behavior, actual bodily harm, and non-fatal strangulation.
A restraining order was enacted to protect the victim.
The court was told that on 16 January 2023, Carran and the victim had been out drinking in Plymouth City Centre.
After being told to leave the Union Rooms, CCTV footage from Plymouth City Council showed Carran outside, raising his hand to the victim’s head and either grabbing or punching her, before they disappeared from view.
Another camera captured Carran and the victim some meters away, where he was seen hitting her on the head and then throwing her to the ground.
The assault proceeded as Carran grabbed her by the throat and dragged her on the floor.
An independent witness recounted witnessing Carran kicking the victim three times, as if she were a football.
Police arrived on the scene, arrested Carran, and released him on bail.
Following the incident, the victim moved to Liverpool to avoid him.
Carran also traveled to Liverpool, which led the victim to contact Merseyside Police, as she felt trapped and unable to escape.
During their interaction, she disclosed a history of domestic violence, including multiple assaults and strangulation incidents, one of which nearly caused her to lose consciousness and left bruising on her neck.
The victim also described how Carran controlled many aspects of her life, including her phone and finances, and kept her apart from her family.
Carran later returned to Cornwall and continued trying to communicate with her, prompting the case to be transferred to Devon and Cornwall Police.
Following the sentencing, PC Jack Chapman from Moonstone Domestic Abuse Unit stated: “The victim’s bravery was crucial in bringing this case to justice.
Her strength and courage in confronting Carran are commendable.
This was a complicated domestic violence case, demonstrating the important work done daily by Plymouth Moonstone.
“We reassure all victims that they will receive full support, and we will thoroughly investigate all crimes of domestic abuse.”
